You have read the papers. You have compared the studies. You have identified the research gap. Now comes the next big question: “What exactly should I work on? ” This is where a gap must be transformed into a clear research topic. And here is the biggest truth: A broad field is not a research direction. Artificial Intelligence is not a research topic. IoT is not a research topic. Robotics, Deep Learning, Medicine, Business, and Space are also not research topics. They are broad domains. A good research topic must be specific enough to explain clearly, but deep enough to create contribution. A simple way to build clarity is through three connected elements: Topic. Problem. Research Question. The topic tells you the general area. The problem identifies the pain point. The research question tells you exactly what you want to investigate. For example, wearable sensing systems may be your topic. The problem may be that noisy signals reduce reliability in real-world conditions. The research question may be: “How can we reduce noise and improve the reliability of wearable sensor signals in outdoor environments? ” Now the direction becomes visible. This matters because many research topics fail before the actual research begins. Some are too broad. Some are chosen only because they are trendy. Some have no real-world relevance. Some cannot produce measurable outcomes. Some have no clear novelty. Some depend on unavailable data, tools, or equipment. And some are impossible to complete within the available timeline. A research topic should not be chosen only because it sounds exciting. It should be designed with strategy. A very useful method is the Three-Filter Method. The first filter is real-world relevance. Ask: Does this problem matter outside academics? Will industry care about it? Will society benefit? Does it solve a genuine pain point? If the answer is yes, the topic has value. The second filter is feasibility. Ask: Can I complete this within my time frame? Do I have access to the required data? Do I have access to the necessary equipment, software, and skills? Can I validate the results? A brilliant idea that cannot be completed is not a strong research topic. It is a good idea trapped in the wrong timeline. The third filter is novelty. Ask: What is new here? What am I improving? What limitation am I solving? What new scenario, dataset, method, or evaluation am I introducing? A strong topic passes all three filters. It is relevant. It is feasible. And it is novel. One of the most practical ways to find such a topic is to look for repeated limitations across research papers. If many papers say that a method works only in controlled environments, that is an opportunity. If studies are not tested on diverse datasets, that is an opportunity. If computational cost is high, that is an opportunity. If privacy, interpretability, robustness, or real-world validation are missing, those are opportunities too. When a limitation repeats, research is quietly pointing toward the next problem. The next step is to narrow the topic using the zoom-lens strategy. Start with a broad domain. Then choose a sub-domain. Next, identify the problem area. Then define the specific problem. After that, decide the solution direction. For example: AI in healthcare. Then AI in wearable health monitoring. Then early screening using wearable sensors. Then a specific disorder. Then the challenge of noisy signals. Finally, a topic such as: “Noise-Robust Early Screening Using Multimodal Wearable Sensors and Machine Learning. ” That is no longer just an interest. It is a research direction. Before finalising your topic, ask yourself: Is the problem clearly defined? Is it relevant to the real world? Is there a visible research gap? Can I complete it with my available resources? Can I measure the outcome? Is it novel enough to contribute? And is it meaningful enough to keep me committed? Do not chase trends. Solve problems. Do not choose only what is easy. Choose what is valuable and achievable. Do not make the topic too broad. Do not make it so narrow that it loses significance. Find the gap. Frame the problem. Ask the right question. Choose the right topic. Build with clarity. Contribute with impact.
